We have worked hard to establish an innovative, creative curriculum which excites and inspires pupils at HCA, part of this rich diet of experiences includes exploring the Christian faith and other world religions.

Have a look through our gallery to see some of the fabulous things we do!

The Bishops Harvest Appeal

We loved this years harvest celebration at the Abbey. We learnt all about the Bishops harvest appeal and the work Christian Aid do in Africa to help sustainable development. Pigeon peas are awesome. We were told the story of Frank and how planting these peas have helped his income and future life. We shared facts about teh appeal, the peas themselves and we even painted them! The whole community turned out to help us celebrate and pray for plentiful harvests all around the world.

Community Litter Pick

We took part in the 'Big Cumbria Litter Pick' to support our local community. We collected over 10 huge bags of rubbish.

Cluster School Christingle

We celebrated with an amazing Christingle service at our local Abbey. |this involved all the local cluster schools. We got to sing hymns, worship together and each lit our own christingle.

Worship in the community

We love worshipping with the residents at our local care home. Our minister Phil delivers a service and we contribute by singing and saying prayers. We always end by chatting to the residents and enjoying some cake and tea!

The Big Cumbria Bible Challenge

We have loved taking part in the Big Cumbria Bible Challenge. We took part in lots of activities to help us learn all about the Gospel of Luke.

Global RE Week

This year we held our first Global Christianity week. We loved exploring Christian practice and traditions all over the world. We looked at different crosses and symbols and made our own crosses outdoors using materials from our area- we even made a cross using our bodies! Helen Elvin came into school and helped us design and made our own wooden cross to hang at the front of our school. It was amazing whittling the wood. Every single child in school chipped away at the wood to help create the final piece.

Easter and Christmas ....the big story

Hayley from NISCU comes in to teach us very special Easter and Christmas lessons, we use drama and discussion and this year we even used jigsaws to piece together the Easter story. We were also investigators and had to work out – who moved the stone?

Community Services at Holme Cultram Abbey

Our Harvest, Christingle and Christmas services are an important part of our school calendar. Last year we learnt all about the charity ‘Pumpkins Against Poverty’ and explored Christmas around the world. This year we are learning about the Bishops Harvest Appeal. Our Christingle is lovely, we get together with all the schools in our cluster and have a shared celebration with our communities.

Cracking Bible Story Eggs

This year our decorated Easter egg competition was themed on bible stories- the child came up with the most wonderful ideas!

HCA traditions

Christian traditions- We explored how Easter is celebrated across the globe. We celebrated Jesus' resurrection and new life by taking part in our own tradition of 'egg dumping'. Everyone in school takes part and we love celebrating together.

World Faith Days

Each year we hold three very special World Faith Festival days. These are multi-sensory and explore the customs and traditions of people all over the world. We eat food, listen to music, dance, sing and make lots of crafts.

KIDZ club and Messy Church

NISCU run our brilliant KIDZ Christian club every week. We learn together, sing songs and have lots of fun. We also love taking part in our Community Messy Church each half term. We have lots of fun, play great games and always have lots of food! Parents and younger brothers and sisters love joining in too.

Phil's World Wide Ministry

Our local minister and friend Phil came in to work with us following his visit to Romainia

He shared with us the purpose of his mission, the work he did and lots of information about the culture he experienced. We thought about different ways we can support others in our wider world.

History of Holme Cultram Abbey

We worked with the Solway Alliance to explore the history of the Monks who used to worship and live in the Abbey many centuries ago. We looked at their roles and responsibilities, created our own traditional badges and explored the architectural changes that have occurred over the years. We even took part in an archaeological dig and found tiles the monks made many years ago!

Prayer Space Day

We held head a fantastic Prayer space day outdoors with our friends from NISCU and our local volunteers. We reflected on our place in the world, celebrated God's love and thought about others who are in need. We shared our thoughts in many different ways and had great fun listening to each other’s’ views.

Class Reflection Areas

We have some wonderful class reflection areas and use these to help us have some time and space to think. We also use them for prayer or to think about our school values.

Walk Through the Bible

We are very lucky to have Hayley visit us and deliver Walk through the bible sessions. We use drama and activities to learn all the stories in the old testament. We really enjoy discussing them together.
