  • Maths in the Early Years

Maths in Early Years is a play-based, hands-on approach focused on developing number sense and spatial awareness through daily routines and exploration. It emphasises exploring shapes, comparing quantities (more/less), and counting in context.

Key aspects of Early Year's maths include:

    • Number Sense: Developing an understanding of the "fiveness" of 5, recognising dot patterns on dice/dominoes, and understanding numbers as made of smaller numbers.
    • Practical Play: Stacking blocks, filling/emptying containers, sorting objects, and using counting songs with props.
    • Daily Contexts: Counting during cleanup, setting tables (one-to-one matching), and comparing sizes of objects.
    • Language Development: Using mathematical vocabulary like "heavy/light," "full/empty," "long/short," and "add/take away" during activities.
    • Shapes and Measurement: Identifying 2D and 3D shapes in the environment and comparing quantities.

The approach aims to create a fun, interactive environment that builds the foundation for more formal mathematics.
